This Saturday marks the 60th anniversary of the Rome Treaties, which laid the foundation of the European Union that we know today. On 25 March 1957, the six founding countries signed the Euratom Treaty and the Treaty establishing the European Economic Community. The former is commonly known as the Treaty of Rome and created the European Economic Community (EEC) or 'common market'.

The official website 60 years of the Rome Treaties provides an overview of events around Europe to mark this special occasion. It also contains links to useful background information on both the past and the future of the European Union:

The website is also available in Dutch and all other official EU languages (via the menu in the top right corner).

EU heads of state or government will meet in Rome on Saturday. They are expected to adopt a declaration setting out a joint vision on the future of the European Union and the integration process. All documents regarding this meeting are available on the European Council's website.
